What is Zaleplon Used for?

The most common Zaleplon indication is for insomnia, of which there are three main types. They are defined as the following:

  • Sleep-onset insomnia – Difficulty getting to sleep at night. The amount of time is takes to get to sleep is usually more than 30 minutes, but it may take several hours for some people.
  • Sleep-maintenance insomnia – Difficulty staying asleep throughout the night. Some people wake up in the middle of the night and find it difficult to get to sleep again, whereas others wake up too early in the morning.
  • Transient insomnia – This is a type of insomnia occurs due to disturbance in the sleep-wake cycle. It can be caused by working day and night shifts, or as a result of jet lag, for example.

People experience different symptoms, and while all the below may not be applicable, you may be suffering from insomnia if you experience any of the following:

  • Difficulty falling asleep at night
  • Waking up throughout the night
  • Waking up too early
  • Feeling tired in the day
  • Not being able to nap in the day despite feeling tired
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling stressed and irritable

As we mentioned, there are three main types of insomnia, and they can be either acute or chronic. Acute insomnia lasts for less than three months, and chronic insomnia lasts for over three months. Your symptoms must affect you three or more nights per week in order to be classified as a sleep disorder.

There are several potential causes for insomnia, and it may be classified as a primary or secondary health condition. If it is a primary disorder, then this is the only set of symptoms that you need to treat as it is not caused by something else. If your insomnia is a secondary condition, then you may need to treat the underlying health problem as well. Some potential causes for insomnia include:

  • Sleep hygiene – going to bed and getting up at different times each day
  • Mental health problems – such as depression or anxiety
  • Stress – for example at work or university
  • Environment – sleeping in a room that is too loud, or that is too hot or cold
  • Medication or substances – such as drinking too much caffeine or alcohol

The above list is not exhaustive, and it may be that the reason for insomnia is not listed, or you do not know what is causing it. If you are experiencing symptoms and are looking for an effective management option, then you are in the right place. We are going to explain some of the Zaleplon benefits as well as alternatives to medication shortly.

How Does Zaleplon Work?

Zaleplon are sleeping pills which target the central nervous system to cause sedation. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord, and it connects to the peripheral nervous system throughout the rest of the body. The central and peripheral nervous systems have many nerve cells, called neurons, which transmit information in the form of electricity. The information is regulated by chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters, which can either be excitatory or inhibitory. The former stimulate electrical activity and the latter subdue it.

The Zaleplon mechanism of action works in a similar way to other Z drugs. Even though this medication is not a benzodiazepine, the Zaleplon active ingredient modulates the gamma-aminobutyric acid-benzodiazepine (GABA-BZ) receptors in the brain. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and has sedative and anxiolytic properties. When Zaleplon binds to the GABA-BZ receptors in the brain, GABA is produced and secreted which leads to sedation and relaxation.

How Long Does Zaleplon Last?

Known as an ultrashort-acting sedative hypnotic, the Zaleplon duration of action is shorter than that of other similar medications. The medication is rapidly absorbed by the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, after ingestion. The absorption rate will vary slightly between individuals depending on factors such as your metabolism, body mass index (BMI), and whether or not you take the medication with food. If an individual has a fast metabolism, the medication will work more rapidly compared to an individual with a slow metabolism.

Those with high BMIs may not feel the effects of the medication as quickly as people with a lower BMI. Although it should not alter how much of the medication is absorbed, taking it with food may slow the absorption rate. Typically, the Zaleplon onset of action occurs 5 to 15 minutes after ingestion. This is much faster than other Z-drugs or benzodiazepines which can take 20 to 30 minutes to start working.

The Zaleplon elimination half-life is 1.5 hours on average which means the effects should last for around 3 hours. This medication is particularly useful for the management of sleep-onset insomnia due to its ultra-short onset of action. As it has a short elimination half-life, it is safe to drive the next day, as long as there is a 12-hour gap.

Zaleplon Dosage Guide

Zaleplon 10mg is the usual starting dose and it can be increased or decreased if necessary. It is always best to start on the lowest possible dose as this type of medication causes increased tolerance. This means that you may not benefit to the same extent over time, or you will need to increase your dose for the same level of efficacy. Zaleplon 20mg is the highest dose available and may be appropriate for severe insomnia.

Zaleplon tablets should be taken just before you go to bed. They should be swallowed whole without crushing the medication in any way. As we discussed earlier, Zaleplon causes increased tolerance, so it should ideally be used as a short-term treatment option. For those with chronic insomnia however, you may need to take this or a similar medication on a long-term basis.

For both acute and chronic insomnia, you should take it for 3 days or less per week, spacing the days out evenly throughout the week to reduce the risk of decreased efficacy and physical dependence. If you have been taking it more regularly or for longer than 3 weeks, you will need to gradually taper off the medication to reduce any withdrawal effects that you may experience. If you stop the medication suddenly, you could experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and insomnia.

Zaleplon Side Effects

Before you buy Zaleplon it is important to be aware of any potential side effects. A lot of people do not experience any at all, and for those that do they are usually mild and resolve on their own. Some common Zaleplon side effects include:

  • Feeling drowsy
  • Feeling sick
  • Decreased appetite
  • Dry mouth

Rarely, some people experience severe side effects. If you experience any of the following you should stop taking the medication immediately and seek professional advice:

  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Amnesia
  • Difficulty breathing

Again, this is rare, but some people experience a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis after they take Zaleplon. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include swelling of the face and lips, a rash on the face and neck, wheezing, and closing of the airways. This is considered a medical emergency and if you experience anaphylaxis you should go to hospital straight away.

Zaleplon Alternatives

Other medications are available for the treatment of insomnia. Zolpidem has a short onset and duration of action, so it is another good option for sleep-onset insomnia. Zopiclone is another of the Z drugs and has the longest duration of action of the three mentioned, which makes it particularly useful for sleep-maintenance insomnia. Sleep-maintenance insomnia is the most difficult type to treat, but luckily it is the least common. Some people also use benzodiazepines such as diazepam or lorazepam as they have a similar mechanism of action. They are also used for the treatment of anxiety disorders such as generalised anxiety and social anxiety.

When your circadian rhythm, also called your sleep-wake cycle, is interrupted, it affects hormones such as melatonin which regulate your usual cycle. Regular sleep is important for your overall health and medication such as Zaleplon is very effective. There are reasons that people may not wish to take medication however, and there are other methods you could try.

Sleep hygiene is important whether you take medication or not. You should try to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time each day, make sure your room is not too hot or too cold, do not use your phone or laptop in bed. if you cannot sleep you should get up and reset or take 5 minutes before you try to get back to sleep.

Is Zaleplon Safe for Everyone?

Luckily, Zaleplon is safe for most people over the age of 18, however there are some people who should avoid taking it. You should arrange to have a consultation with your GP before you buy Zaleplon if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are allergic to Zaleplon
  • You have severe liver or kidney problems
  • You have obstructive sleep apnoea
  • You have been treated for addiction in the past
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should not take Zaleplon, however It may be safe for you to take a lower dose if any of the other conditions affect you.

Before You Buy Zaleplon

If you cannot sleep from time to time, that is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Lots of people find it difficult to sleep if they are stressed about something for example, and they usually find that their symptoms resolve when the source of stress is gone. Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone, and some people require treatment to get their sleep back on track. As we discussed earlier, good sleep hygiene is important to maintain even if you are taking medication.

Some people who take sleep aid medication can experience dangerous sleep behaviour, such as getting up and driving, cooking food, sleepwalking, having sex, or making phone calls. These behaviours occur without being fully awake, and the people who experience this do not remember they have done it. If you have a history of sleepwalking or unusual sleep behaviour, then it may be best to avoid taking Zaleplon.
